Kyoto Trip Winter 2018 Day 2: Gion, Higashimaya District, Maccha House

We had been snacking around a lot that day, so after our visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine, we went back to Gion and the Higashiyama District to explore some more. Again, this day was very cloudy, so it was a bit challenging to take the shots we wanted. We did see a few interesting spots as we walked along.

This was also the Christmas break/holiday season, therefore it was also tourist season. We saw a lot of tourists and locals wearing their rented kimonos and taking photos in front of Yasaka Shrine and the pagoda. We can also feel the last of the autumn leaves about to fall, as it welcomes winter into Kyoto. The weather was still alright even though it was cold but it turned colder as the days passed.

Colorful wishing shrine. Very busy with women and girls wearing kimonos.

Because we were along the Higashiyama District, we stopped by a famous green tea dessert shop called Maccha House. This place is famous for, well, any green tea flavored dessert really but, don't go past the Matcha Tiramisu. This is on my list of foods to eat again when I come back to Kyoto. This place was BUSY and the queue to order was always long, unless you timed it right.

So how was the tiramisu, you ask? Well, imagine the softest, richest cream blanketed over layers of matcha sponge cake. It could have been just utter richness and sweetness but all of these were cut back with the dusting of the matcha powder on top. Every matcha lover must try this at least once and decide for themselves.

The other desserts though, were not too bad. The matcha dessert latte, I admit, was a bit strange for me. I wasn't sure if it's a drink or a dessert but the sweetness was mellow enough. The matcha parfait was surprisingly good. You can easily finish it if you're hungry and only had this for lunch. For a snack, I think it's a bit too heavy, unless shared.
