Ponto Izakaya @ Pontocho, Kyoto

After our unagi don, Mom and I ventured out to look for an izakaya joint along Pontocho.

Note - Mom loves izakaya. Her memories of her doctorate days in Kyoto and Tokyo were of izakaya nights with her mentors and colleagues. Japanese people drink and smoke a lot which seem to be their majority of their vices. She is actually tasked with our food for this trip and we tried to squeeze in as much as we can. I thought she did an awesome job and most of the time, I was the map (well, using Google map, that is!).

Ok, back to the izakaya. After walking down the whole street, we settled on the first izakaya we saw, called Pontocho. At this point, I realized that most of the men do not serve customers. And they rarely speak (or bother to speak) English too or explain the menu. Seems like their mentality is that they simply don't have the time nor the patience.

Our waitress was really nice and patient in explaining things to us and recommended a few dishes for us to try.

Walking along Pontocho

Our hot sake
Mom's favorite - salted edamame

Chicken Thigh Yakitori
Smoked duck - very salty

Pork tongue - my favorite!
